I have written this thing called "Katherine the Great, Ace of the Distaff", a spicy, humorous, off-beat story about the first woman to play major league baseball.Kate has a congenital deformity......she is missing the upper part of her middle finger on her right, or 'throwing', hand. This deformity, she comes to realize, makes a baseball, when she throws it, act rather erractically. The orb is virtually unhittable! The story takes us from said realization to the game's showcase: the World Series, takes us meanderingly, to say the least; for this is a tale not only about the grand old game, but about other things as well.The story is written in the 1st person, by Kate's nephew, who happens to be a batboy on the team for whom Kate comes to play.Although, as said, the novel is spicy and humorous and off-beat, there is a certain pathos about it, as Kate goes from a devoutly religious {She initially wants nothing to do with playing professional baseball} nature to one of secular apathy and resignation. By book's end she is downright dissolute. Events are kind of stretched out of credibility's shape, but what happens to the young woman has the scent of proper dimension.It's actually tough to define, this story.
